Chapter 1 of ENA Dream BBQ launched earlier this week. It’s an open world adventure game based on the cult glitchcore web series ENA by Joel G (I hadn’t heard about until I played the game, but I’m now obsessed). In my review, I called ENA Dream BBQ “an unmissable mixed media fever dream,” and I wouldn’t hesitate to check it out if you’re still on the fence. It’s free-to-play on Steam and really, really cool.
One of my favourite aspects of ENA Dream BBQ is that the fun doesn’t stop once you roll credits. As well as an alternate route to the finish line, the game is teeming with secrets and easter eggs, many of which are yet to be fully unravelled, or even discovered, by players. Also, if you purchase the Supporter Edition of ENA Dream BBQ (and I highly recommend it), there will be 14 Hourglass Dogs to collect, which have been scattered through the levels of ENA Dream BBQ by the game’s developers.
There’s good reason to seek them out — as well as leading you towards some of the game’s most covert and lore-rich areas, the Hourglass Dogs unlock concept art, animatics and insightful developer commentary, accessible from the Supporter Edition tab in the Extras portion of the Main Menu.
How to find every Hourglass Dog in ENA Dream BBQ
With that in mind, here’s how to find every Hourglass Dog in ENA Dream BBQ Chapter 1. I’ve presented the dogs in a specific order, so that it’ll only take you two runs to get every dog. Obviously, spoilers to follow. I highly endorse seeking them out yourselves, but it will be pretty tricky without some guidance.
Red Outworld Hourglass Dog (Attic)

The first Hourglass Dog is in the opening area of the game, before you interact with the bed and get dumped into the casino. It’s in one of the houses, and you need to walk around the area until you hear a ringing bell in the mix (you can turn the in-game music down to help with finding it). It takes a little while, but once you hear the bells, walk towards the sound and you should begin to hear barks too. Once you’ve identified the right building, you need to hop over the counters (check them all, it could be on either side) and jump in the darkness to find a little ledge that leads to an attic. Dog numero uno is in this attic, at the end of the path it leads you down.
Uncanny Streets Hourglass Dog (Ship Roof)

Once you make it through the Lonely Door, the first Hourglass Dog you can find will be on top of the ship-like building you emerged from. To make it up there, pick up the pet quest from the horse-like NPC in the square, then head right from the square and towards the vending machine man, then right again towards the side of the ship. Follow the blood splats to platform up and onto a lower level of the ship, and then enter the door ahead of you. Once inside, climb the red and white pole. Then follow the path forward again, and climb another red and white pole in the darkness. You’ll emerge on top of the ship with the Hourglass Dog in front of you.
Uncanny Streets Hourglass Dog (Korok Rock Circle)

The second Hourglass Dog in Uncanny Streets is one of the trickiest to unlock. Head right from the square and towards the NPC Taski Maiden, who appears next to a submerged rock structure which juts out like a pyramid. Head behind the pyramid to find a loose rock which ENA can push around by moving into it. Unfortunately, you have to push the rock over the red bridge and all the way to the square with the quest-giving NPCs. From the square, look to your left and you’ll see another submerged rock structure in the distance. Behind it is a circle of rocks, and you need to roll your loose rock into the free slot to summon the dog.
Purge Party Route Hourglass Dogs (Coffin Parkour)

We’re tackling the Purge Party route’s Hourglass Dogs first. If you don’t know how to get to this area, you need to head to the giant slumped figure in Uncanny Streets and crawl up his shirt sleeve. You’ll end up in a cave system, with a triumvirate of masks spinning in front of you. Collect the masks, then head out of the caves and back towards the figure, who will now have a functioning face. Chat with the ferryman and then interact with the taxi nearby to be transported to this coffin-laden level.
With that out of the way, you then need to walk through the lower paths until a giant rock structure blocks your way. Then turn around and climb up the debris to the position shown in the screenshot above. From here, you want to jump to the coffin on your left with the yellow X mark, and follow the coffins through that gap and around the corner to a little platform that will let you climb on top of the level. The platforming is tricky — but the game is quite forgiving with how late you can jump, so try to tap X or Space as late as possible when you’re sprinting to the edge of a platform. Once you’re up there, we can grab the three dogs in this area.
Purge Party Route Hourglass Dog (Gravestone Wall Cubby)

Now that you’re on top of the level, walk around until you spot the two particular funerary monuments shown in the screenshot above. You need to get into the hole across the way there, where our Hourglass Dog is chilling. You can try and launch yourself into the hole from the top of the level (and crouch on the way for a better chance). Or, you can also try and position yourself on top of either the tall grave or the small one, and sprint jump towards the hole and hope for the best. This one is tough. Good luck! Try and see if you can get back onto the gravestone platform on your way out from the dog cubby. Otherwise, you’ll have to do the coffin jumps again.
Purge Party Route Hourglass Dog (Watcher Ritual)

Back on top of the level after completing the coffin parkour, head to the opposite side of the map from the giant ear and you’ll spot a series of Watcher NPCs in a desolate basin. Simply drop down and jump inside their eerie summoning circle to claim this Hourglass Dog.
Purge Party Route Hourglass Dog (Giant Ear Hidden Wall)

The final Hourglass Dog in this area doesn’t require you to complete the Coffin Parkour section, thankfully. Just proceed through the level as normal until you find the Giant Ear which leads you to the party. In that area, navigate to the backside of the ear and walk through the stone wall underneath it to find this pup floating inside.
Purge Party Hourglass Dog (Party Animal)

Once you’re inside the Purge Party, you’ll be tasked with shimmying through a series of multicoloured dance floors. Crucially, don’t talk to any NPCs that you see as that will progress the route and take you out of this specific level. The Hourglass Dog is hiding on one of these dance floors, and you need to venture through this Lost Woods-like area to find them. Keep the faith as you explore and you’ll encounter this pup eventually. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture when I found this particular dog, as it was encountered during my initial story progression. Please accept my apologies in the form of this flame-chested Australian.
Lost Village Hourglass Dog (Piero’s Studio)

Once you’ve completed the Purge Party section, fall into the milk-white river in the black void area at the end of the game and you’ll land in the Lost Village. Ignore the huts for now and head towards the right wall, where there’s a series of pinkish doors you can knock on with the interact button. Try all of the doors a few times until one of them lets you in. You’ll find yourself in a little artist’s studio in the ramparts of a medieval castle. There’s also a portrait of Frank (the blind crowned royal with Armored Core legs) painted by someone named Piero. IIRC this is one of the genies in ENA Dream BBQ, but let’s leave the lore there for now. Either way, there’ll be a Hourglass Dog across from the painting, next to the medieval vista.
Lost Village Hourglass Dog (Hidden Mannequin Room)

Head back out into the Lost Village area and directly across to the other side of the map. Hug the left wall towards the top left corner of the level, and you’ll find a hidden alley towards a room with a few mannequin corpses. This area reminded me of E1M1 for some reason… anyway! Pup’s in the corner. Grab that Hourglass Dog!
Purge Party Route Hourglass Dog (Water Temple)

Once you find the right hut in the Lost Village, you’ll fall into a psychedelic tunnel, and then emerge into an area that I can only describe as some kind of water temple. When you get there, there won’t be an Hourglass Dog in the centre as seen in the screenshot above. That’s because you need to jump off of the side and into the surrounding void, and fall consecutively to your death until it appears. Keep arcing to the left as you respawn to ensure you don’t land on the platform, and the pup will appear eventually. This is your final Hourglass Dog on this route, so roll those credits, start a new save, and get back to the Uncanny Streets.
How to get the Humanboard in ENA Dream BBQ

Now that you’re on your second save, we need to follow the alternate ending route and unlock the Humanboard. Head to the Uncanny Streets again, and then pick up every quest from the NPCs at the square. You can find all of the pets to get the chocolate currency, purchase the mayonnaise, and use it on the watcher to get past the gatekeeper. Or if you want to save some time and get an achievement, there is another way.
Head to the main bridge and speak to the tracksuited gatekeeper. When you’re prompted to revive them, don’t. Just leave the game running and go make a cup of tea. You’ve earned it at this point. After several minutes, the gatekeeper will die, and you’ll be able to proceed into the next area.
Cross the bridge and follow the path through to find the fourth sister up a height. Talk to her, then head back down the path and keep an eye out for a side path leading to a skull crane. Use the crane to transport the sister back to the square, and you’ll complete the puzzle. Speak to the sisters to receive the Motherboard as a reward, and then you need to take that to the Shaman in his tent nearby.
The Shaman will upgrade the Motherboard into a Humanboard, which is a handy platforming tool ENA can equip and use to access out-of-reach spaces. Square indented patches of ‘Fertile Soil’ are dotted around the maps in ENA Dream BBQ, and you can point the Humanboard at the soil and interact with it to grow a human platform that ENA can clamber up.
Uncanny Streets Hourglass Dog (Humanboard Cave)

From the main square with all the NPCs, face the sisters and head north to find one of the many large rock buildings. Circle around to the back of the building and you’ll find a little cubbyhole that you can crouch to enter. It may be familiar — this is the cave system where you found the masks for the Purge Party route. Explore the caves until you find the room shown in the screenshot above, and use the Humanboard on the Fertile Soil to reach the dog in the overhead alcove.
Uncanny Streets Hourglass Dog (Son of Storms)

Back outside in the first section of Uncanny Streets, look around on the floor near the gatekeeper bridge for another patch of Fertile Soil. Use the Humanboard on it and platform to the top of the nearby building, where you’ll find a storm cloud. Speak to the storm cloud and they’ll mention they’re waiting for their son. Now, look up into the sky above and you’ll see a big cloud. Put the controller down or step away from your keyboard, and just watch. After several minutes, the cloud son will lower itself to settle near the top of the building, revealing an Hourglass Dog. Jump and collect it to move onto the final two pups.
How to cross the river in ENA Dream BBQ

Now you need to proceed to the white river section at the end of the game. This involves crossing the gatekeeper bridge and using the Humanboard on the Fertile Soil patch to begin platforming into the sky. You’ll eventually reach a platform with a creepy face that kicks you into the same dark bathroom void from the Purge Party route.
Don’t try to get across the white river with the bamboo platforms, though. Instead, head to the broken red bridge and use the Humanboard on the soil patch to create a steady platform over the river. Once you’re safely on the other side, walk towards the giant porta potty, and you’ll eventually end up in a bathroom, where we can continue collecting the Hourglass Dogs!
Bathroom Hourglass Dog (Alone in the Dark)

Once you make it to the bathroom, turn around immediately and walk into the darkness. Eventually, you’ll find a little textured alcove that you can follow to the right for our penultimate Hourglass Dog.
Bathroom Hourglass Dog (Stall Buddies)

Still in the bathroom, head into the open stall (as you would normally) and crouch on the chair. Sit there for a few minutes and the stall next to you will open, revealing our final Hourglass Dog. Now you can head to the Supporter Edition tab in the Extras menu to fill your boots on concept art, animatics and developer commentary. Great job!
